For those looking to expand their interest in stone as a material, the National Stone Centre offers the following regular courses:

Both are ideal for beginners looking to gain insight into the skills needed to underpin these traditional crafts. Courses are open to anyone provided they are reasonably fit and well. Attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Included in the course are all tools and materials, gloves (you are welcome to bring your own heavy-duty work gloves and you will receive an Attendance Certificate at the end of your course.

A lovely range of food and drink can be purchased from the onsite cafe or you can bring your own sandwiches and drinks if you prefer. Toilet facilities are close to the walling and carving sites.

You will need to make sure you have durable and waterproof clothing, including sturdy boots, as courses take place in most weather conditions. Sun cream and a hat is also strongly advised.

General information for all courses
  • Courses run from 10am to 4pm
  • There is ample parking
  • Courses involve lifting and care is needed when handling and working with stone to avoid back, hand, foot and eye injuries. Your instructor will provide safety instruction and guidance.
  • First aid equipment is held by instructors. Participants need to inform us of any significant medical issues prior to the start of the course.
