Quarrying Industry in Wales Book

qiw-ah-coverfinalThe history of quarrying in Wales has been documented in a new publication which was funded largely by the Aggregates Levy Fund in Wales.

The 224 page, full colour, bilingual book entitled ‘Quarrying industry in Wales – a history’ was written by Ian Thomas of the National Stone Centre. It is a UK first, illustrating for a broad readership, the development, an industry vital to us all but invariably overlooked. Wales, usually associated with coal, steel and slate, all ably recorded, is still a key source of stone.

The book divides Wales into 11 sub-areas, each of which begins by setting the geological and older historical context from Medieval times onwards, through great engineering projects, before examining in detail, the more recent industry, its technology, products, statistics, environmental issues and people.

The author concentrates on tracing the emergence of the modern industry from 19th century family enterprises to the multi-million tonne producers of today. Slate working was strictly outside the brief and in any event, is well covered elsewhere.

The book has already won considerable praise for its technical content, readability and high quality presentation.

Under the terms of the Aggregates Levy grant, many copies have been distributed to educational bodies, libraries and interest groups in Wales.

The book is now available for general sale from the publishers:- The National Stone Centre at a price of £19.95 including postage and packaging to UK (overseas postage at cost)
or from bookshops.
