The National Stone Centre is a place crammed with ancient tropical reefs, rocks and minerals, centuries of industrial history, and is full of wildlife treasures - a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It is set in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, on the edge of the Peak National Park, and is close to the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

Set in fifty acres of Derbyshire countryside, the National Stone Centre site contains six former quarries, four lime kilns and over one hundred and twenty disused lead mine shafts.
Visit the Discovery Centre to see the 'Story of Stone' exhibition, browse through the best rock and mineral shop in the Midlands, or have some light refreshment in the café area.
At the National Stone Centre a number of stone-related courses and workshops covering all aspects of dry-stone wall construction are available. These courses are extremely popular and early booking is important to avoid disappointment.
Members of the Dry Stone Walling Association from all over Britain constructed a Millennium Wall, forming a trail on the site. Using their own local materials and styles, this unique outdoor museum of traditional dry-stone walls, built in nineteen sections, shows the incredible variety of walling skills and traditions available across the country.

The site is open all year round with no entrance charge. The Discovery Centre is open every day (except Christmas Day). There is ample car and coach parking and the site is easy to find. There are facilities for the less able - see Visitor Services for more details.
