Parental approval and exclusion of pupils from visits

Prior parental approval of visits is now required by most schools and is advised by DfES. Parents should be informed of the nature of the activities involved, of special clothing required and of the authority given to supervisors in dealing with problems and emergencies.

A similar system should be applied to parental consent for visits by non-school groups of juveniles (i.e. under 18 year olds).

It may be necessary in exceptional circumstances for pupils to be excluded specific visits on grounds of special educational or medical needs or potential behaviour problems which could increase risk or danger. However, there are rules and guidelines concerning the costs of visits (which parents may decline or be unable to meet), where a visit is decreed to be an integral component of a curriculum based teaching programme and is not generally considered a basis for exclusion. Companies may of course offer to assist in defraying some of the costs involved.
