Introduction
This section of the report brings together all aspects concerned with
the implementation of education-industry linkages. Overriding the considerable
educational opportunities presented by the industry (see previous two
sections and Appendices), the health and safety of all staff and visitors
concerned, is of prime importance to the industry and educational personnel/organisations
alike. The authors make no apologies for the extended coverage in this
respect, but would stress that guidance given here is provided in good
faith; it is no substitute for those concerned seeking specific advice
from and adhering to policies of their own organisations.
Although of absolutely prime importance, "health and safety"
are not the first aspects to be described in this section as these are
very practical matters which do not arise unless a strategic framework
is established. Nevertheless health and safety will strongly influence
what can and can't be achieved even at strategic level, and will therefore
play a significant part in conducting site audits, planning events and
initiatives, etc.
In addition to health and safety, statutory and logistical requirements
(whether generic or specifically related to quarries or a given site)
and a number of other legal provisions apply, particularly including
those relating to child protection and disability discrimination, transport,
insurance (many of which have significant health and safety implications).
Other factors such as educational body or company policy (in part referred
to in the previous two sections), availability of finance, timing and
weather may also determine whether or not a programme is successful
or even proceeds in the first instance. Finally, guidance is given on
practical aspects such as making the first contact, appropriate media
and event planning.
